Power Restored Following New York City Blackout

US-NEWYORK-BLACKOUT

Power has been restored after a major power outage turned the skyline of New York City black on Saturday (July 13) night. The power outage occurred on the same day as a citywide blackout in 1977 that resulted in looting and rioting.

This time around there were no reports of riots or looting, but the blackout caused significant headaches for locals and tourists. Subway stations were closed, and Broadway shows were stopped as the lights went out in the middle of performances.

Officials say that a transformer fire is likely to have caused the outage. They were working to determine what caused the fire and why it resulted in a large number of customers losing power.

"Over the next several days and weeks, our engineers and planners will carefully examine the data and equipment performance relating to this event and will share our findings with regulators and the public," utility company Con Edison said in a statement.
