The Top 5 for Friday 6/28/18 - Here Come Da Judge!

posted by Mark Wainwright -

A Supreme Court Justice announces his retirement, and that will keep Washington hot long after this heat wave passes...

Here are The Top 5 Things You Need To Know for Thursday, June 28, 2018 (and we're allowing for a possible tie for #1):

1) (or maybe 1a)

WHOEVER PRESIDENT TRUMP NOMINATES, DEMOCRATS WILL FIGHT

Democrats in Congress furious over POTUS insisting that Supreme Court vacancy should be filled quickly, accusing GOP of shameless hypocrisy after sandbagging Obama nominee Merrick Garland. Are Dems serious, or will they cave? Stay tuned...

2) (or maybe 1b)

SUPREME COURT JUSTICE ANTHONY KENNEDY ANNOUNCES RETIREMNT

He was often the "swing" fifth vote in all those 5-4 decisions, and his replacement is likely to be a very conservative pick from President Trump's short list. Abortion rights activists are especially concerned, thinking a reversal of Roe v Wade is now on the front burner.

(We pause here for an appropriate comedic interlude.)

3)

SUPREME COURT MAKES THINGS TOUGHER ON PUBLIC SECTOR UNIONS

In a (what a surprise!) 5-4 decision, SC rules that public sector employees cannot be forced to pay union "agency dues," even if the union is working on their behalf. Our state is particularly affected, because New York has so many public employees.

4)

HE TOOK THE CASH UP FRONT, AND WHO CAN BLAME HIM?

Syracuse resident Christopher Kimbrough, 40, bought a winning $3 million "Mayhem" ticket, electing to take the lump sum of $1,598,884 immediately... and Yolanda Vega handed him the check! All in a day's work...

5)

WE'RE HAVING A HEAT WAVE, A TROPICAL HEAT WAVE...

Friday will be warmer but okay, Saturday will heat up, and Sunday will be blistering with possible record temperatures. Take it easy out there, and be sure to check up on elderly or disabled folks who might be especially vulnerable.
