Sixth Arrest Made In Brazen Break-In And Murder Last December


Syracuse, N.Y. - A 25-year-old man is now being charged in a Merriman Avenue Break-In and murder that 5 teenagers were arrested for last month.

Syracuse Police say that 33-year-old James Smith was killed after a group of men broke into his home and shot him. About a month ago Police arrested four teens ranging from 15 to 19 years old. All four are charged with murder and burglary.  Two weeks ago Police arrested another 19-year-old and just yesterday police arrested a sixth person; 25-year-old Michael Smyre.

Police say they have arrested everyone who took part in Smith's murder but say there may still be more to uncover. Police are still asking for tips, which may be made anonymous using the “SPD Tips” app for your iPhone or Android Device. 

Below are the names, ages, charges, and dates of the six arrests.

On January 2nd, 2018, Detectives arrested Quinton L. Gathings, 19 years old, Tyrone Byrd, 17 years old and Francis Mercado, 16 years old. All three suspects were charged with Murder in the 2nd degree and Burglary in the 1st degree and lodged at the Onondaga County Justice Center.

On January 3rd, 2018, Detectives arrested a 15 year old male, charging him with Murder in the 2nd degree and Burglary in the 1st degree. He was later lodged at Hillbrook Juvenile Detention Facility. His name is not being released due to his age.

On January 25th, 2018, Detectives arrested Cameron C. Webster, 19 years old, charging him with Murder in the 2nd degree and Burglary in the 1st degree. He was lodged at the Onondaga County Justice Center.

On February 8th, 2018, Detectives arrested Michael A. Smyre, 25 years old, charging him with Murder in the 2nd degree and Burglary in the 1st degree. He is currently lodged in the Onondaga County Justice Center.
