Thruway Near Syracuse Shut Down After Mulitiple Accidents

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — The Thruway near Syracuse is closed in both directions after multiple vehicles crashed in an area where high winds and blowing snow were causing whiteout conditions.State police say Interstate 90's westbound lanes just west of Exit 39 were closed around 7:45 a.m. Thursday. 

The Thruway Authority says the eastbound in the same area have been closed by another multi-vehicle accident.There are reports of at least one person injured after about 10 westbound vehicles were involved in a chain-reaction crash just west of Syracuse.

Troopers say whiteout conditions were reported in the Syracuse area around the time of the crash.High winds gusting to 50 mph have knocked down trees and power lines from Buffalo to New York City's northern suburbs, cutting electricity service to about 75,000 utility customers. About 20,000 of the outages are in Saratoga County, north of Albany.
