Mike Hopkins has been the so-called coach in waiting behind Jim Boeheim for many years.

But the waiting process has not been an idle one for Hop, as in previous offseasons he has been linked to head coaching jobs at St. Bonaventure, Charlotte, and USC.

And this year he has already shown up very seriously on the radars of Marquette and Boston College.

With news of Mike Montgomery's retirement breaking this afternoon, allow me to speculate that Cal might emerge as a threat to pry Coach Hopkins away from Central New York as well.

If not for Florida Gulf Coast's run to the Sweet 16 last year, and Andy Enfield parlaying that into the USC job, Hopkins might already be the head coach of a Pac-12 team in his home state of California. Could an opportunity to prove that the Trojan administration made the wrong choice be enough incentive for him to switch coasts this time around?
