A 2nd grade student at McKinley-Brighton Elementary school was found to be in possession of an unloaded handgun which he brought to school from home. A staff member spotted the student with the handgun and immediately confiscated the weapon. The Syracuse Police Department was notified and is investigating the situation.

No one was injured and the school was not in lock down. Dismissal was delayed by 10 minutes in order to ensure all parents received a letter describing the incident from the school principal.

The district says that safety and security for the student's of the district is critical and that they will continue to monitor and review their safety protocols.
