A special unit of the Onondaga County Sheriff's Department says they were able to quickly find a lost autistic child in a matter of minutes.

Officers with Project Lifesaver say the 11-year-old boy is low-functioning but very clever, and has run away from home several times before.  This time, the child was wearing a special transmitter that helped officers track him down.  The child was nearby outside a restaurant and wasn't in any danger.  However, officials say they would not have been able to spot him nearly as fast using traditional search methods.

Sgt. John Stephens with Project Lifesaver says anyone who has a family member of any age with diminished capacity is urged to contact them about participating in their program.  The number to call is 435-3006.
