Utica, N.Y. - A 71-year-old man has been charged with second-degree murder in the fatal stabbing of another man at a central New York apartment.
Local media report that police in the city of Rome say Lawrence Abbott stabbed 60-year-old Paul Grimes last Friday night after Grimes showed up at his ex-girlfriend's apartment.
Police say Abbot had given the woman a ride home in the afternoon and the two were drinking beer when Grimes arrived at the woman's home. Officers say the two men got into an argument and Abbot pulled out a knife and stabbed Grimes, who later died from his wounds.
Authorities say Abbot told police he acted in self-defense.
He was supposed to be in court Monday, but his appearance has been postponed until Thursday because he' hospitalized for a respiratory issue.
