JOHNSON CITY, N.Y. (AP) _ The uncle of an upstate New York policeman slain in the line of duty says his nephew achieved his dream when he became a law enforcement officer.

Hundreds of state troopers, deputies and other police turned out Friday for the funeral for Officer David Smith in his hometown of Johnson City, a village just outside Binghamton.

Mourners filled the Sarah Jane Johnson Church, where Smith's uncle, John McConegly, gave the eulogy. He said all Smith wanted in life was to be a law enforcement officer.

Authorities say the 18-year veteran was shot with his own weapon by a 43-year-old medical office technician just after the officer had arrived at the scene of a reported disturbance Monday morning. Another officer then fatally shot Clark.

The 43-year-old Smith is survived by his wife, Christian, and son, Andrew.
