The unemployment rate in Central New York is down significantly from a year ago, from 7.4 in May of 2013 to 6.1 in May of 2014.

The New York State Department of Labor says one of the reasons for the sharp decrease is the uptick in private sector jobs in areas such as professional business services, retail trade, utilities, and accommodations and food services.  The 6.1 percent rate is equal to the nation's current unemployment rate, and it's the lowest seen here since 2008.
