After a 15 year investigation, the US Attorneys office in Syracuse has arrested a Cicero man and have charged him with sending 21 threatening letters with a white powder inside.
59 year old Brian Daniel Norton has been charged with several felonies after this spree of letters sent locally and nationwide between 1997 and 2012.
The letters were all theatening in nature and contained a white powder, and the writer claimed that the powder was anthrax or ricin and that the recipients were going to die. The feds though say the powder was harmless.
Those receiving the letters included Lemoyne College and Bishop Ludden High School locally. Others getting the letters with the white powder also included Senator John McCain, former Defense Secretary Robert Gates and former Congresswoman Anne Marie Buerkle.
Norton has made an initial appearance in US District Court in Syracuse. If convicted, Norton faces a possible maximum sentence of ten years. He's being detained pending a detention hearing next week.
