Parks and Trails New York says they are coordinating a cleanup weekend April 25-27 to get as many groups as possible to help.  The cleanup involves the entire canal system, not just the Erie Canal, which makes it both a bigger and potentially more of a locally-focused effort.  Individual groups will have the opportunity to choose canals and canal trails they want to clean up, which could represent areas they use for recreation, or businesses located along the canals.

Those interested in participating can check out a map of cleanup locations that will provide details of individual cleanups, who is coordinating them, and how to reach them.  For more information, visit the Parks and Trails New York website.
